St Johns from St Augustine

St Johns, Florida is located in Northwest St Johns county in the northeast section of Florida.  If you are having a hard finding information on St Johns, don't be surprised.  This is because it is a newly minted name for an area that has long had the "Jacksonville" label.  St Johns was never inside Jacksonville.  As the city grew on the southern side, the St. Johns County line was crossed, but a new name was never assigned.  The area that had the initial growth was just across Julington Creek from Jacksonville, so the name just spread as well.

St Johns is the area that is marked by the 32259 zip code and stretches to the northern side of CR 210.  This area includes the Fruit Cove, Aberdeen, Durbin Creek, and Julington Creek area, as well. Strangely, the southern side of 210 is not considered to be part of St Johns, but is called St Augustine instead with a 32092 zip code.  This is true even though it is further from Saint Augustine than Jacksonville.  While, because of geography, it would have made a lot of sense to include the 32092 zip code as part of St Johns, it remained part of St Augustine while 32259 got their new city name.

The St Johns area has largely been two separate areas.  The first area to experience growth was the Fruit Cove and Julington Creek area.  SR 13 and Racetrack Road is the major intersection in this area.  This intersection is right across Julington Creek from Jacksonville.  This area does not currently have direct access to I-95 although Racetrack Road crosses the interstate.  Residents have to go up SR 13/San Jose to I-295 to I-95 or go down Russell Sampson a few miles south to access I-95 directly.  There is a new road, Bartram Park Boulevard, that connects the area to the St Augustine Road/I-95 area in Mandarin.

Over the past few years the 210 Corridor has experience phenomenal growth and is no longer recognizable from ten short years ago.  Several new schools have been built along this corridor and shopping centers have been popping up.  Now you have a choice of two grocery stores and several different restaurants.  The north side of the street is considered St Johns.  The 210 Corridor has a few great golf courses including St Johns Golf and Country Club (south side of street-St Augustine address), Cimarrone Golf and Country Club and South Hampton (south side of street-St Augustine Address).  This area is a few short minutes from Jacksonville's Southside.  In addition, this area is less than 30 minutes from historic downtown St Augustine.  There is I-95 access from this area.  Currently, the 210/I-95 area experiences congestion in the morning from commuters and the I-95 exit ramp experiences congestion in the afternoon.  St Johns County has begun I-95 exit enhancements at the 210 intersection.  The 210 Corridor is four-laned in this area and has very few traffic lights so with the exception of the morning traffic, it is very easy to zip around.

Now there are two developments in between the two areas that are beginning to make their mark.  These are Durbin Creek and Aberdeen, both of which are located between Racetrack Road and County Road 210, between SR 13 and I-95.  2007 saw a few new roads open in this area, making Julington Creek and 210 much "closer".
